PCC sees what’s in store for Anglesey Scout Camp

Date

North Wales Police and Crime Commissioner Andy Dunbobbin visited Ynys Môn Scouts’ Talwrn District Campsite on Anglesey on 14 October, during one of its Autumn site maintenance days, to learn more about the Scouts’ work and activities and to see how money taken from criminals is being used for the good of the young people of the island through the Scouts’ Central Storage Resource project.

The Your Community, Your Choice fund supports grass-roots projects and is backed by the North Wales Police and Crime Commissioner, North Wales Police and Community Trust (PACT) and North Wales Police. The funding for Your Community, Your Choice comes partly from money seized by the courts through the Proceeds of Crime Act, with the rest from the Police and Crime Commissioner.

The Anglesey District Scouts (Ynys Môn Scouts) are comprised of seven groups that serve the young people of the entire island from the ages of 4 to 18 years. They currently have a total membership of over 300 and growing, plus around 70 active volunteers. The funding from Your Community, Your Choice has helped provide a safe and secure storage facility onsite at Talwrn for items which are now easily accessible to Scout groups.

While at the Camp, the PCC saw the preparations underway for new trees that the group hopes to plant in January and the fencing being installed around the second campsite area where future trees will also provide shelter.

Dr Dylan Evans, of Ynys Môn Scouts said: “Ynys Môn Scouts Council are very grateful for this funding award enabling the purchase of a second container at our campsite in Talwrn for use by all our adult volunteers and young people of ages from 4 to 18 at the site. The second container also reduces transport costs and increases the use and enjoyment of the campsite as well as the overall experience for all.”

North Wales Police and Crime Commissioner Andy Dunbobbin said: “It was a pleasure to visit Talwrn and to see the work and activities of the Scouts at the District Camp. Both today and during previous visits, I have seen how much the camp means to Scouts on the island and how committed they are to developing and increasing the facilities at the site for the benefit of all. Supporting communities is a key part of my Police and Crime Plan for North Wales and, as a former Scout myself, I know that their work is an example of this in action. Many thanks to all at Talwrn for their warm welcome.”

PACT Chairman Ashley Rogers stated: “I am delighted that we have been able to support Ynys Môn Scouts with Your Community, Your Choice funding. The work they do to engage and support young people across the island is invaluable and, with over 300 members and counting, I am sure the District Campsite will only become more valuable as a community resource as time goes on.”

North Wales Police T/Assistant Chief Constable Nigel Harrison said: “It is good to see such a variety of community projects across the North Wales Police area being supported by Your Community, Your Choice funding. The provision of new facilities at the Talwrn Campsite is a practical example of how Your Community, Your Choice funds can be used for the good of the community.”

Your Community, Your Choice is celebrating its tenth anniversary in 2023 and, over the past ten years, a total of over £500,000 has been awarded to more than 150 projects working to reduce crime in their areas and to support the priorities in the Police and Crime Commissioner’s Police and Crime Plan.
