Ensuring the safety of all road users is a key priority for the Police and Crime Commissioner for North Wales and his Office. We are committed to supporting North Wales Police and our partners in reducing road casualties, promoting responsible driving, and enhancing public awareness of road safety issues.
Understanding the Risks
The most common causes of serious and fatal road traffic collisions are well documented. Often called the Fatal Five, these are:
- Driving whilst under the influence of drink and/or drugs.
- Speeding.
- Using a mobile phone at the wheel.
- Not wearing a seatbelt.
- Careless/dangerous driving.
These behaviours are not only illegal but significantly increase the risk of harm to all road users.
Education and Community Engagement
We support a range of initiatives aimed at improving road safety through education and community involvement:
- Community Speedwatch: A volunteer-led initiative that empowers local residents to monitor vehicle speeds in their communities.
- BikeSafe: A national scheme offering advanced riding assessments and safety advice for motorcyclists.
- Young Driver Programmes: Targeted education for new and learner drivers to instil safe driving habits from the outset.
Enforcement and Prevention
North Wales Police employs a range of enforcement tools, including:
- Automatic Number Plate Recognition (ANPR)
- Targeted patrols in high-risk areas
- Speed Awareness Courses as an alternative to prosecution for certain offences
These measures are designed to deter dangerous driving and promote compliance with road traffic laws.
If you are involved in or witness a road traffic incident, it is important to report it appropriately. You can do so via the North Wales Police website:
Report a Road Traffic Incident: Submit a report online
Guidance on Collisions and Incidents: What to do and when to report
The OPCC will continue to work closely with North Wales Police, local authorities, and community groups to support initiatives that make our roads safer.
